 Graphite pencils are an excellent and versatile medium, capable of producing stunning creative effects. They are also an affordable option, with all the necessary supplies readily available at most stationery stores.

My go-to pencil is a 4B, as it offers great flexibility for shading, texture, and tonal variation. Other essential tools include smooth white paper, an eraser, a pencil sharpener, tissues, and a soft brush for blending. 

Proper lighting is also crucial for achieving accuracy and enhancing the overall quality of your drawings.

My name is Sharon, and I’m a self-taught sketch artist originally from Cape Town, now living and working in Johannesburg, South Africa.

My journey into drawing began unexpectedly in early 2019, sparked by a simple doodle during a spiritual meditation session. Inspired, I sketched a meditative mudra hand symbol. When I stepped back to look at it, I thought, Not bad for a first attempt! That small moment of discovery encouraged me to explore my creativity further.

What I found was that drawing takes me into a space of complete immersion—where time fades away, and the experience becomes almost meditative. It’s a deeply restorative and therapeutic process. As they say, once you start, you can’t stop—and that’s how The Hungry Pencil was born, sharpened time and time again.

Since I balance my art with a full-time profession, I draw whenever I find spare time. I’d love to share my creative journey with you and connect with fellow artists and those who appreciate the art of capturing life.
